Korean Dogs

Some Success at Last - but more work needed

After several years of campaigning and petitioning  , DogAid Australia working with IAKA and KAPS,  is happy to report that Korea’s Animal Protection Law has recently been amended to include tougher penalties for animal cruelty as well as stronger legislation to address stray and abandoned animals. Additional changes include provisions to allow for better law enforcement by giving power to local governments who can appoint “Animal Protection Officers” to investigate cruelty and seize animals which are being abused. The amended law was passed in January of 2007 and will allow a one-year grace period, going into effect at the beginning of 2008. But more work needs to be done as dogmeat is still being sold and eaten in South Korea.

DOGMEAT PROHIBITION CAMPAIGN - KAPs is pushing to put a total ban and end to the dogmeat trade in South Korea and curb the dogmeat demand. In order for this to become effective, KAPS proposes a 3-5 year period in which the Korean Government can gradually educate people on the harmful effects of eating dogmeat. In this time dog-meat dealers would have the opportunity to change their jobs. If the government and press concentrate their efforts on disclosing falsehood of health benefit claims by dogmeat traders, alot of traders would change their profession. The government can then offer to buy the dogs raised by the dealers and encourage them to change jobs. After such period the Korean government can enforce a law banning the slaughter of dogs and cats for food and medicine. Currently there has been little response by Korean Government by this proposal.
